Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004)
★★

this movie is quite a bit of fun, although I would rather watch the Netflix show over the movie, this is a fun one and I can see it being rather nostalgic -- technically this film is amazingly realized, the set dec, the costumes, the make up and hairstyling, truly some great stuff in this thing.
I love the sets in this film, they are so busy, full of life and beautiful. count Olaf's house, the market in the section with Aunt Josephine, Monty's house, man they look wondaful the sets giving very old work art deco almost Klaus (2019) inspired sets which was very cool and visually pleasing to look at -- also the bright and beautiful skies are amazing in this film, especially the sky when they are sailing sure it's unrealistic but it adds to the environment
I also really like the make up and hairstyle in the film look great as well, the hairstyle and make up on Count Olaf particularly is amazing, I could barely tell it was him in the Monty house which was seriously impressive, also the little make up details all over the film look amazing too.
the costume design work in this film is great as well, Violet's dresses, Aunt Josephine's dresses, Justice Strauss costumes, Count Olaf's different and distinct costumes.
I do feel like the movie characterizes our characters from the novel rather well, they have an understanding of the characters, it just needs more time to expand and show that.
notes below
-----------------------
- I like this flute and choir at the beginning, very cool.
- um? the little elf.. oh okay never mind.
- "clever and reasonably attractive orphans" legitimately one of the craziest things I have ever heard.
- Wes Anderson would be a great director for this movie.
- I like that shot through the eye, very cool.
- I can't help but compare this to the Netflix show and wow was Neil Patrick Harris a show stopper.
- I like the sets -- very art deco kind of vibes which is very cool and fun.
- the top hat is ridiculous omg I love it.
- the focus on the locks going way was pretty great.
- I like the reveal to the train that was pretty great.
- I like that Sunny is just freaking big chilling
- I do like the make up and hairstyle in the movie, it looks great especially disguised Jim Carry.
- I do like the dilapidated state of the herpetology room, covered in moss and vines very cool set.
- this could have used a bit more runtime to expand on what is already presented here and make it overall stronger.
- this scene where they decode her note is very cool.
- house falling off the cliff was pretty cool set work as well -- also I like that pretty much all her predictions came true.
- "welcome aboard, hot potato"
- I like how this Olaf is the embodiment of "little scamp" and it's because of Jim Carrey.
- the wedding is when I think Jim Carrey is doing his best Count Olaf, an overly exaggerated down on his luck actor who is constantly preforming his life who is mischievous and evil but not because he want's to be evil, because he was made evil by circumstances.
- this transition from perfectly fine house to burned down house was pretty cool.
- pretty cool closing credits, cool animation on them.
