Orion and the Dark (2024)

I liked this movie quite a bit, very stylized, very fun, light. The story takes some interest diversions I’m indifferent on them, the ending kind of fixes some of those issues.. but some might still be there, again I liked it a lot but just odd choices.
- the future bits didn’t totally work for me, the ending recontextualizes some of it but not all of it
- very good soundtrack / score, very atmospheric and fun and vibrant.
- Warner Warthog was a really funny addition, hearing him in the background at the planetarium to very funny.
- felt like two different movies? Or maybe it feels like two clashing ideas? Someone went back and rewrote a bunch of scenes to be less length and left out a lot of important / necessary details?
- loved the very stylizing animation in some aspects felt like they should have gone harder like even the entities should have been sketchbook drawn to fit in with the world a lot more, “twist” would have also made sense with this idea.
- liked the voice actor for Orion and Dark fun duo played off each other very well!
- I think a fun aspect was this twist because it wasn’t necessarily a twist. you can kind of tell what’s gonna happen pretty early on but it felt a bit weird like stuff was missing from the ending? Maybe they were trying to subvert expectations by completely and hard right turning.
- confusing but rush wrap up - feel like the ending was a bit rushed
Definitely in need of a second rewatch, I am also just very curious to read the original Kaufman script to see what exactly changed from the original, it felt like quite a bit was changed / altered. Overall liked this movie quite a bit! Definitely check it out good movie.
