Bo Burnham: What. 2013

★★★★

Watched 30 Jan 2025

I feel like Bo (the real Bo) knew that he struck something wonderful here, exploring comedy while being able to explore these more complex thoughts as to not get par-asocial or anything this is where my engagement with real Bo stops and my engagement with Fake Bo begins, as we watch as Bo begins to break down his art, the show kind of becomes a commentary on the art that Bo is making and how he struggles to make things for himself vs things that his audience will like, his casual “see he was heartbroken that’s why he was using that language, we all learned something” seems like a moment where he is justifying his language and the words it’s crazy to watch him end up at war with himself at least twice with left brain, right brain and we think we know you, both commenting on the art and both commenting on the self, if the first special was an exploration of what art means to Bo this special is an exploration of the art means the same thing to the audience that it does to him and how he feels about that connection,

I wish the set was a bit more intricate, the lighting gets an upgrade, his movement on set gets a bit more intricate but I miss the cool artifice of the previous specials set dec, having the words on the back was super cool and made the special feel unique visually now the focus has come down to what he is saying, we will see him in the next special explore this visual element more so I guess I do what I want eventually who knows I’m stupid thanks for reading.
