Bo Burnham: Words, Words, Words (2010)
★★★½
So fascinating, I had seen this before but years ago coming back to it, all the material has aged but it’s still consistently funny and good and still deeply profound, prophetic how this proceeds What and Make Happy considering what they become, this show feels like the exploration of what will eventually become those shows.
I love the idea that he put the entire show on the walls in the back, I feel it attacks his core thesis pretty head on, it’s cool that at points in the show we can read a joke while he is telling it or read the entire show post, Bo has said that the person that he plays on stage is an extension of himself but isn’t representative of him essentially they are not the same person but that stage Bo is heightened version of himself, you can see it pretty clearly expressed by the first number words words words.
Of course the stage is setup like this because Bo is exploring the words phrases and intricacies of comedy itself, how humor functions and so much more.
Overall this thing has always been about Bo (the character) exploring his relationship to art and in turn his relationship to the audience, he is here to get those laughs, and they are going to laugh dammit.
